Health Connect on Android: bring your sleep, scale and workouts together

How Health Connect works on Android, how to connect your watch, smart scale and workout app, and what lifters gain by putting the data in one place.

Key takeaways

  • Health Connect is Android's shared store for health and fitness data, built into recent Android versions.
  • Each app writes what it measures (sleep, steps, weight) and reads only what you allow.
  • Your watch, smart scale and workout app can share data without talking to each other directly.
  • You control every permission per app and per data type, and can revoke it anytime.

On Android, your watch knows how you slept, your smart scale knows your weight and your workout app knows your sets. Until recently, each kept its data to itself. Health Connect is the shared place where they meet, so a 100 kg (220 lb) bench session can sit next to the 5 h 40 night before it.

What Health Connect is

Health Connect is Android’s on-device store for health and fitness data. Apps write what they measure and read what you allow:

  • a sleep tracker or watch writes sleep sessions;
  • a smart scale app writes weight, body fat and lean mass;
  • a workout app reads them to give your training context.

On recent Android versions it lives in the system settings; on older ones it is an app from Google Play.

Why lifters should care

Your training log explains what you lifted. It cannot explain why a session went badly. The usual suspects live outside the gym:

Health Connect gets that context to your workout app without you typing anything.

How to set it up

  1. Open Health Connect (Settings › Security and privacy › Privacy › Health Connect on many phones, or the Health Connect app).
  2. Check the writers. Make sure your watch or sleep app and your smart scale app have permission to write their data.
  3. Give your workout app read access only to the types it needs: sleep, steps, exercise, weight, body composition.
  4. Sync once in each app, then check that yesterday’s night and this morning’s weight appear.

Privacy: what to check

Apps that read Health Connect data must follow Google’s Health Connect policy, including limited use: no selling the data, no advertising use. Before you allow an app:

  • Does it only read, or also write?
  • Does its privacy policy say health data is never used for ads?
  • Can you delete your data easily?

You can revoke any permission at any time in Health Connect › App permissions. See also fitness app health data privacy.

How rythme helps

rythme reads steps, exercise, sleep, weight and body composition from Health Connect, with your permission, and never writes to it. Your body composition is read on your phone and never uploaded to our servers. Each workout sits next to the night before it, so you can see what your log alone cannot.

FAQ

Do I need to install Health Connect?

On recent Android versions it is built into the system settings. On older versions it is an app from Google Play.

Can Health Connect store my sets and reps?

It stores exercise sessions, not the full detail of every set. Keep sets, loads and reps in reserve in your workout app.

Why is my data not showing in my app?

Check that the source app (watch, scale) writes to Health Connect, and that the reading app has permission for that data type in Health Connect › App permissions.
